What Does The Quran Say About Jesus? Is He Dead Or Alive? Was He A Divine Being?
This page explores what the Quran and the Hadith say about Jesus, and Prophet Muhammad. Was Jesus more than just a man based on what is written in the Quran and the Hadith? Since there is some confusion about what people of the Islamic faith believe about Jesus, I thought this an interesting topic to cover. I was curious myself, so I went right to the source to find out. Though there's plenty of passages denying that Jesus was more than a prophet, there's also evidence to support it.
As a disclaimer, this page is intended as food for thought, and I encourage everyone to do your own studying and make up your own minds. I'm by no means an avid student of Islam or the Quran, but from what I've learned I think that my beliefs make me a "person of the book"("the book" meaning the Bible), and a polytheist according to Islam, because I believe in the trinity - the Father, Son, And Holy Ghost. I want to clarify, however, that I do not believe that the three are separate - but one God. God made us, and the Holy Spirit resides within each of us when we accept Jesus as our savior, so, I believe that God is capable of being many places at once.
The Bible says:
1 John 4:1-4
1 Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world. 2 By this you know the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is of God, 3 and every spirit that does not confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is not of God. And this is the spirit of the Antichrist, which you have heard was coming, and is now already in the world.
4 You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.
...Interestingly, the Quran reads:
BEHOLD, We have inspired thee (O Prophet) just as We inspired Noah and all the prophets after him - as We inspired Abraham, and Ishmael, and Isaac, and Jacob, and their descendants, including Jesus and Job, and Jonah, and Aaron, and Solomon; and as We vouchsafed unto David a book of divine wisdom.
And We caused Jesus, the son of Mary, to follow in the footsteps of those (earlier prophets), confirming the truth of whatever there still remained of the Torah; and We vouchsafed unto him the Gospel, wherein there was guidance and light, confirming the truth of whatever there still remained of the Torah, and as a guidance and admonition unto the God-conscious.
"But if thou art in doubt as to that which We have revealed to thee, ask those who read the Book before thee. Certainly the Truth has come to thee from thy Lord, so be not thou of the doubters."
...These passages confirm that the Bible is truth, and states plainly that if you have any doubt in the Quran, you should go ask those who read the Bible what the truth is.
There's plenty of information about the religion of Islam on the internet, so I'm not going to go into detail about that here. However, I do think a little background is appropriate.
The Prophet Muhammad lived from 570 AD until 632 AD. It's believed that he was given divine appointment by the Archangel Gabriel to be a messenger of Allah(God). Since Muhammad was illiterate, he memorized and recited the inspired passages that came to him. The passages were written down by others over time, and ultimately consolidated into the Quran. There are more of Muhammad's teachings in a collection known as the Hadith. The Hadith is supplemental to the Quran. So, let's move along and take a look at what that Quran says about Jesus. The following points combined support the notion that Jesus was much more than just a prophet. Each point is numbered and the title is in orange for easy reference:
1. Mary, Jesus mother, is the only woman named in the Quran. She must have been considered very special! In fact, the third chapter in the Quran is dedicated to her, "Maryam". The Quran and Hadith read that Mary and Jesus were sinless and pure:
"Behold! the angels said: "O Mary! Allah hath chosen thee and purified thee- chosen thee above the women of all nations."
Sahih Muslim, Volume 4, Book 30, Hadith Number 5838
"Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: The Satan touches every son of Adam on the day when his mother gives birth to him with the exception of Mary and her son."
2. The following verses in the Quran agree with the Bible that Mary was a virgin, that God appointed her to have a son, Jesus, and that Jesus was the Son(Spirit) Of God:
16. Relate in the Book (The story of) Mary, When she withdrew From her family To a place in the East.
17. She placed a screen (To screen herself) from them;
Then We sent to her Our angel, and he appeared Before her as a man In all respects.
18. She said: "I seek refuge From thee to (God) Most Gracious: (come not near) If thou dost fear God."
19. He said: "Nay, I am only A messenger from thy Lord,
(To announce) to thee The gift of a holy son."
20. She said: "How shall I Have a son, seeing that No man has touched me, And I am not unchaste?"
21. He said: "So (it will be): Thy Lord saith, "That is
Easy for Me: and (We Wish) to appoint him As a Sign unto men And a Mercy from Us":
33. "So Peace is on me The day I was born, The day that I die, And the day that I Shall be raised up To life (again)"!
34. Such (was) Jesus the son Of Mary: (it is) a statement
Of truth, about which They (vainly) dispute.
35. It is not befitting To (the majesty of) God That He should beget A son? Glory be to Him! When He determines A matter, He only says To it, "Be", and it is.
36. Verily God is my Lord And your Lord: Him.
And Mary the daughter of 'Imran, who guarded her chastity; and We breathed into (her body) of Our spirit; and she testified to the truth of the words of her Lord and of His Revelations, and was one of the devout (servants).
3. The Quran states that everyone is merely a slave of Allah. A master cannot love a slave, nor can a slave love a master.
Quran 19:95 - "There is none in the heavens and the earth but cometh unto the Beneficent as a slave."
Quran 2:23 - "And if ye are in doubt concerning that which We reveal unto Our slave (Muhammad), then produce a surah of the like thereof, and call your witness beside Allah if ye are truthful."
Quran 4:172 - "The Messiah will never scorn to be a slave unto Allah, nor will the favoured angels. Whoso scorneth His service and is proud, all such will He assemble unto Him;"
...As Christians we also serve God, but the Bible says we are His family:
12 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name:
When we accept Jesus as our savior, we have a Father and a friend who knows us intimately, is always with us, and loves us unconditionally:
20 Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me.
2 Corinthians 16
16 And what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For you are the temple of the living God. As God has said:
“I will dwell in them And walk among them.
I will be their God, And they shall be My people.”
46 While He was still talking to the multitudes, behold, His mother and brothers stood outside, seeking to speak with Him. 47 Then one said to Him, “Look, Your mother and Your brothers are standing outside, seeking to speak with You.”
48 But He answered and said to the one who told Him, “Who is My mother and who are My brothers?” 49 And He stretched out His hand toward His disciples and said, “Here are My mother and My brothers! 50 For whoever does the will of My Father in heaven is My brother and sister and mother.”
9 But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, for the suffering of death crowned with glory and honor, that He, by the grace of God, might taste death for everyone.
10 For it was fitting for Him, for whom are all things and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons to glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings. 11 For both He who sanctifies and those who are being sanctified are all of one, for which reason He is not ashamed to call them brethren, 12 saying:
“I will declare Your name to My brethren;
In the midst of the assembly I will sing praise to You.”
13 And again:
“I will put My trust in Him.”
“Here am I and the children whom God has given Me.”
14 Inasmuch then as the children have partaken of flesh and blood, He Himself likewise shared in the same, that through death He might destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the devil, 15 and release those who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.
4. The Quran says that God only reveals himself through a messenger:
"The Knower of the unseen, so he makes his secrets known to none, Except a messenger whom he chooses. For surely he makes a guard to go before him and after him, That he may know that they have truly delivered the messages of their Lord; and he encompasses what is with them, and He keeps account of all things."
...But the Bible Tells Us That God reveals Himself to everyone who believes. Jesus said:
15 No longer do I call you servants, for a servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I heard from My Father I have made known to you.
5. The Quran says Jesus spoke as an infant:
"He will speak unto mankind in his cradle and in his manhood, and he is of the righteous."
29 But she pointed to the babe. They said: "How can we talk to one who is a child in the cradle? 30 He said: "I am indeed a servant of God: He hath given me revelation and made me a prophet"
6. Muhammad said that Jesus healed, created life, and resurrected the dead while he was on earth, which agrees with the Bible.
"He will say: "I bring you a sign from your Lord. From clay I will make for you the likeness of a bird. I shall breath into it and, by God's leave, it shall become a living bird."
"When Allah saith: O Jesus, son of Mary! Remember My favour unto thee and unto thy mother; how I strengthened thee with the holy Spirit, so that thou spakest unto mankind in the cradle as in maturity; and how I taught thee the Scripture and Wisdom and the Torah and the Gospel; and how thou didst shape of clay as it were the likeness of a bird by My permission, and didst blow upon it and it was a bird by My permission, and thou didst heal him who was born blind and the leper by My permission; and how thou didst raise the dead by My permission; and how I restrained the Children of Israel from (harming) thee when thou camest unto them with clear proofs, and those of them who disbelieved exclaimed: This is naught else than mere magic."
7. The Quran says that Jesus went to heaven, is alive, and will return. Mohammad is dead and will not come back:
Jesus is alive with God and will return -
"Lo! God said: "O JESUS! Verily, I shall cause thee to die, and shall exalt thee unto Me, and cleanse thee of (the presence of) those who are bent on denying the truth; and I shall place those who follow thee (far) above those who are bent on denying the truth, unto the Day of Resurrection. In the end, unto Me you all must return, and I shall judge between you with regard to all on which you were wont to differ."
"That they said (in boast), “We killed Christ Jesus the son of Mary, the Messenger of Allah”—but they killed him not, nor crucified him, but so it was made to appear to them, and those who differ therein are full of doubts, with no (certain) knowledge, but only conjecture to follow, for of a surety they killed him not—nay, Allah raised him up unto Himself; and Allah is Exalted in Power, Wise.”
And (Jesus) shall be a Sign (for the coming of) the Hour (of Judgment): therefore have no doubt about the (Hour), but follow ye Me: this is a Straight Way.
...Muhammad is dead and buried in Medina awaiting judgement -
Sahih Bukhari, Volume 5, Book 58, Hadith Number 266 - "Narrated 'Um al-'Ala: An Ansari woman who gave the pledge of allegiance to the Prophet that the Ansar drew lots concerning the dwelling of the Emigrants. 'Uthman bin Maz'un was decided to dwell with them (i.e. Um al-'Ala's family), 'Uthman fell ill and I nursed him till he died, and we covered him with his clothes. Then the Prophet came to us and I (addressing the dead body) said, "O Abu As-Sa'ib, may Allah's Mercy be on you! I bear witness that Allah has honored you." On that the Prophet said, "How do you know that Allah has honored him?" I replied, "I do not know. May my father and my mother be sacrificed for you, O Allah's Apostle! But who else is worthy of it (if not 'Uthman)?" He said, "As to him, by Allah, death has overtaken him, and I hope the best for him. By Allah, though I am the Apostle of Allah, yet I do not know what Allah will do to me"
...The following passages reveal the Muslims fate after death:
Sahih Bukhari Volume 1, Book 012, Hadith Number 770 - "Narrated By Abu Huraira : The people said, "O Allah's Apostle! Shall we see our Lord on the Day of Resurrection?" He replied, "Do you have any doubt in seeing the full moon on a clear (not cloudy) night?" They replied, "No, O Allah's Apostle!" He said, "Do you have any doubt in seeing the sun when there are no clouds?" They replied in the negative. He said, "You will see Allah (your Lord) in the same way. On the Day of Resurrection, people will be gathered and He will order the people to follow what they used to worship. So some of them will follow the sun, some will follow the moon, and some will follow other deities; and only this nation (Muslims) will be left with its hypocrites. Allah will come to them and say, 'I am Your Lord.' They will say, 'We shall stay in this place till our Lord comes to us and when our Lord will come, we will recognize Him. Then Allah will come to them again and say, 'I am your Lord.' They will say, 'You are our Lord.' Allah will call them, and As-Sirat (a bridge) will be laid across Hell and I (Muhammad) shall be the first amongst the Apostles to cross it with my followers. Nobody except the Apostles will then be able to speak and they will be saying then, 'O Allah! Save us. O Allah Save us.'
There will be hooks like the thorns of Sa'dan in Hell. Have you seen the thorns of Sa'dan?" The people said, "Yes." He said, "These hooks will be like the thorns of Sa'dan but nobody except Allah knows their greatness in size and these will entangle the people according to their deeds; some of them will fall and stay in Hell forever; others will receive punishment (torn into small pieces) and will get out of Hell, till when Allah intends mercy on whomever He likes amongst the people of Hell, He will order the angels to take out of Hell those who worshipped none but Him alone. "
"And the disbeliever says, "When I have died, am I going to be brought forth alive?" Does man not remember that We created him before, while he was nothing? So by your Lord, We will surely gather them and the devils; then We will bring them to be present around Hell upon their knees. Then We will surely extract from every sect those of them who were worst against the Most Merciful in insolence. Then, surely it is We who are most knowing of those most worthy of burning therein. And there is none of you except he will come to it. This is upon your Lord an inevitability decreed. Then We will save those who feared Allah and leave the wrongdoers within it, on their knees."
...The Bible speaks of Jesus return:
7 Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen.
“Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also.”
39 Then one of the criminals who were hanged blasphemed Him, saying, “If You are the Christ, save Yourself and us.”
40 But the other, answering, rebuked him, saying, “Do you not even fear God, seeing you are under the same condemnation? 41 And we indeed justly, for we receive the due reward of our deeds; but this Man has done nothing wrong.” 42 Then he said to Jesus, “Lord, remember me when You come into Your kingdom.”
43 And Jesus said to him, “Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise.”
47 “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a dragnet that was cast into the sea and gathered some of every kind, 48 which, when it was full, they drew to shore; and they sat down and gathered the good into vessels, but threw the bad away. 49 So it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come forth, separate the wicked from among the just, 50 and cast them into the furnace of fire. There will be wailing and gnashing of teeth.”
Some Christians believe they will sleep when they die until Jesus returns, others believe they go straight into His presence. Either way, we have been saved so we will not go to hell.
8. The Quran gives 3 names to Jesus:
1. The Arabic word for "Word of God"
2. The Arabic word for "Spirit of God"
3. The Arabic word for "Christ Jesus"
More examples(besides what's already been presented):
"Word" And "Christ Jesus"- Quran 3:45
"Lo! The angels said: "O Mary! Behold, God sends thee the glad tiding, through a word from Him, (of a son) who shall become known as the Christ Jesus, son of Mary, of great honour in this world and in the life to come, and (shall be) of those who are drawn near unto God.
"Spirit" And "Christ Jesus" - Quran 4:171
"O People of the Book! Commit no excesses in your religion: Nor say of Allah aught but the truth. Christ Jesus the son of Mary was (no more than) a messenger of Allah, and His Word, which He bestowed on Mary, and a Spirit proceeding from Him"
And We have propounded yet another parable of God-consciousness in the story of Mary, the daughter of Imran, who guarded her chastity, whereupon We breathed of Our spirit into that which was in her womb, and who accepted the truth of her Sustainer’s words - and (thus,) of His revelations - and was one of the truly devout.
The Bible agrees that Jesus is; "Word of God", "Spirit of God", and "Christ Jesus":
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
31 but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name.
9 But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His.
...The Quran and Bible also agree that God(Allah) spoke and created everything:
"Then He directed Himself to the heaven while it was smoke and said to it and to the earth, "Come [into being], willingly or by compulsion." They said, "We have come willingly."
1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.
3 Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. 4 And God saw the light, that it was good; and God divided the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light Day, and the darkness He called Night. So the evening and the morning were the first day.(read entire chapter)
- Allah(God) created everything through his "Word".
- If Jesus is the "Word", the "Spirit of God", and the "Christ" according to Prophet Muhammad, then Jesus is the creator and the creation.
9. The Quran says to obey Jesus:
When Jesus came with Clear Signs, he said: "Now have I come to you with Wisdom, and in order to make clear to you some of the (points) on which ye dispute: therefore fear Allah and obey me."
(We sent all these) apostles as heralds of glad tidings and as warners, so that men might have no excuse before God after (the coming of) these apostles: and God is indeed almighty, wise. However it be, God (Himself) bears witness to the truth of what He has bestowed from on high upon thee: out of His own wisdom has He bestowed it from on high, with the angels bearing witness thereto - although none can bear witness as God does.
10. Jesus taught people to pray to "Abun" -
In the Aramaic language, "Abun" means "our father". When we pray the prayer Jesus taught us to pray, we say, "Our Father in heaven":
5 “And when you pray, you shall not be like the hypocrites. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward. 6 But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly. 7 And when you pray, do not use vain repetitions as the heathen do. For they think that they will be heard for their many words.
8 “Therefore do not be like them. For your Father knows the things you have need of before you ask Him.
9 In this manner, therefore, pray:
Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name.
10 Your kingdom come. Your will be done
On earth as it is in heaven.
11 Give us this day our daily bread.
12 And forgive us our debts, As we forgive our debtors.
13 And do not lead us into temptation, But deliver us from the evil one.
For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.
14 “For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.
